Backyard Garden Program

Objective
Promote food security in Brampton by encouraging residents to grow their own backyard gardens and donate produce to local food banks.
Start date
Program launched in 2019. Starting February 1 of each year, residents can register online to receive a free garden sampler seed kit and five bags of soil. Deliveries of seeds and soil will begin at the end of March. Applications will close once the program reaches 3,000 participants and is open to new participants only

Project Summary
Last year, the program facilitated the donation of nearly 4,000 lbs of produce to residents in need from April to October 2023. Since its inception in 2020, the program has generated nearly 30,000 lbs of produce donations. Participants are required to send monthly updates with pictures of their gardens, which will be showcased on the program’s web page. This platform will also feature photos of this year’s backyard gardens, gardening tips, tutorials, and resources. Residents can share their backyard gardens on social media using the hashtag #BramptonBackyardGarden.
